How to Apply to a University in Korea

Studying in South Korea is the dream of many. Anyone can enter a university in Korea. In this article, we will learn how to apply to a university in Korea and what is needed for this.

How to apply to a University in Korea

First of all, I note that the conditions for admission in almost all universities in Korea are almost the same. The main differences are the deadlines for submitting documents, the requirements for knowledge of the language, and the cost of submitting documents.

Also, you need to remember that some faculties may require additional documents or conditions. For example, creative faculties often ask for a portfolio.

You can apply to a university in Korea from anywhere in the world. The main thing is to have time to do everything on time. Also, you need to take into account the time zone. Korean time is often used in submission deadlines.

Basic conditions for admission

There are NO age restrictions for admission to a university in Korea. Korean universities had students under 15 and over 60. But if you are applying for a grant or scholarship, there may be age requirements.

Applying for admission to a university in Korea takes place online, but then you need to submit a full package of documents in paper form.

List of documents

The list of documents for admission to a university in Korea may differ from university or faculty. But the general list of required documents is about the same.

  1. Application for admission.
  2. Certificate and report card from high school (when applying for a bachelor's degree).
  3. Diploma and report card from the bachelor's degree (upon admission to the master's program).
  4. Certificate of Proficiency in English or Korean.
  5. Letter of recommendation.
  6. Identity card (passport, ID card, etc.)
  7. Parents' identity documents (passport, ID card, etc.).
  8. Birth certificate (or other document confirming relationship with parents)

All documents must be in English or Korean. Therefore, if the original is in some other language, it will be necessary to make a translation and notarize it. And some documents will need to be apostilled.

The application form also includes 1-4 essays, such as a motivation letter. It can be an essay about your plans during your studies and/or after your studies at the university; about what inspired you to apply to study at a given university and/or department, etc.

Some universities may still request a financial statement. There are universities that require a certificate of a certain amount of money in a bank account.

Language Requirements:

English Language

Minimum requirements may vary by university. But the certificates must be of an international standard or those that are accepted in Korea.

  • TOEFL iBT (iBT Home Edition, TOEFL ITP) - 80 or higher
  • IELTS Academic - above 6.0
  • TEPS - above 269

Korean Language

Some universities accept certificates of completion of Korean language courses in Korea. Or a TOPIK exam certificate. Usually, a minimum of 3 levels of TOPIK is required.

Cost of education

The tuition fee at a university in Korea depends on the university and faculty. But, on average, it is about 4,000,000 Korean won (about $3,100).

However, it must be remembered that in the first semester, in addition to paying for the tuition itself, there is also the payment for registration at the university. Around 2,000,000 – 4,000,000 Korean won ($1,500-3,100).

Submission of documents for admission is also paid. Around 50,000 – 150,000 Korean won ($40-120). This amount is non-refundable even if you have not entered the university.

Important dates

The academic year is divided into spring and autumn semesters. And you can start studying either from the first (spring) semester or from the second (autumn) semester. The spring semester in most universities starts on March 2 or on the last week of February. And the autumn semester is September 1 or at the end of August. However, the submission of documents usually begins a few months before the start of studies.

For example, the submission of documents for the spring semester of 2024 at Seoul National University began in early July this year.

Some universities have 1-3 submission flows. Therefore, if you did not make it to the 1st stream, then you will still have a chance to submit documents again to the second stream.

The semester lasts about 4 months, and the holidays are 2 months.

Conclusion

You now have a basic understanding of what it takes to get into a university in Korea. Let me remind you that the general conditions and requirements are almost the same in all universities, but some details may differ depending on the university. Therefore, I advise you to familiarize yourself with the requirements of the university in which you want to enter.

But, unfortunately, some people can’t go out and take a rest. I am talking about high school students, who are going to graduate soon. Seokchon Lake, Seoul Every year in the mid of November Korean high school students have graduation exams or something like an SAT exam in the US, or a Unified State Exam (USE) in Russia. It is a national exam, which is very important. Because exam scores will decide which university students will go to. And that is very important, because as many of you probably know, there is a strong hierarchy in Korean society, and the rank of University plays a significant role as well. Getting Closer to Korean Aviation

It was a while since I took you with me on my trips around Korea. I have lots of photos, notes, and emotions that I want to share with you. And today I want to show you one of the museums, that I visited a couple of weeks ago. It is a National Aviation Museum of Korea that opened its doors just in July 2020. National Aviation Museum of Korea The museum is located in Seoul, right near the Gimpo Airport. So, if you will be around the Gimpo Airport, and have free time, visit the museum. It is free of charge, except for different activities that you can try in the museum. But most of them are not so expensive, around $1-3. At the entrance to the museum, you will meet a cute plane robot. It has a name but I don’t really remember… The museum looks small from the outside, however, there are 3 floors full of different exhibitions, rest zones, etc. 1st Floor of the museum We started from the very 1st floor. It is the largest hall I think. It starts with a history of world aviation. Visitors can
