Buddhist Temple Bongeunsa

Are you ready for an online tour?

Today our destination is a well-known Buddhist temple Bongeunsa Temple. There are a few Buddhist temples with a men ‘Bongeunsa’ in Seoul. But the most famous one is the one which is located in the centre of Seoul, close to the business centre COEX.

A little bit of history…

The temple’s history sacrifices a very long history which starts from the Silla dynasty and continues today.

The temple was built in 794 and it was called the Gyeongsonsa Temple. According to Samguksa (history of 3 states), the monk Yong-hwe was living near Mountain Yonghuk and was studying Buddhist sutras. He was the chief monk in the state of Silla. In addition, in the 38th book of Samguksa it is noted that among the seven main royal memorial monasteries (Sachuwang-sa (사천왕사), Bongseonsa (봉선사), Gameunsa (감은사), Bongdeoksa (봉덕사), Youngmosa(영모사), Youngheunsa (영흥사), Bongyeunsa(봉은사)) there is a temple of Bongyeunsa. During the reign of Silla, Buddhist temples played an important role.

The name of Bongeunsa is mentioned in the history of all 3 states: Silla, Koryo, Joseon. The construction of the temple began under King Hyegong during the reign of the Silla Dynasty. During the reign of the state of Koryo, the Bongeunsa Temple was located in the capital in the city of Gyesong, and was considered a very important temple.

The temple survived the entire history of the Joseon Dynasty from 1392 to 1897, then the Korean Empire, and now it is also part of modern history.

Let’s start our tour to the Bongeunsa?

There are gates at the entrance to the temple as in all Buddhist temples. Buddhists believe that by passing through this gate people leave everything bad behind the door and enter the temple, into the world of Buddha. Visitors enter the world of Buddha with a pure soul.

There are 4 deities at the gate who meet us, like 4 poles: North, South, West, and East.

April 30th was the birthday of the Buddha according to the lunar calendar. And because of the coronavirus, the celebration was very modest. But the whole temple is decorated with coloured lanterns.

Let’s go straight to the prayer house. A marble counter stands in front of the building, where visitors place candles, and make a wish. And on both sides of this rack, there are racks where they put aroma sticks, while also making wishes. Buddhists believe that your wish together with the fragrance from the stick reaches the Buddha.

In addition, you can put a pocket of rice, as a donation. And they also write a wish on a pocket. Candles and pockets of rice can be bought in front of the temple’s main office.

And as you can see, everything is in full trust. You take what you need, and put the money in a special box.

And now, in front of the prayer building, there is a small Buddha in the water. You need to make a wish and water the statue 3 times.

Now let’s go left. There stands the main statue of Maitreya Buddha (meaning “one who is love”). The height of the monument is 23 meters.

Today in the temple they teach and prepare future monks. And also, everyone can stay in the temple for a couple of days to feel at least a little bit of the life of Buddhists.

The temple also has a library that contains the most ancient teachings of Buddhists.

And there is a holy source, or rather a source of holy water. I don’t know how holy she is, but certainly very tasty. And also, this source is an ideal option to end the walk. Especially if your walk was on a sunny (stuffy) day in Korea. The water here is cool even on stuffy summer days.

And we were very lucky, besides we didn’t plan it, but we got to the moment when the monks began to beat the drum and the bell, thereby announcing the evening prayer.

Here is a short video…

After that, the monk rang the bell several times. Walking around the temple to the sounds of a drum and a bell, you feel deeper into the whole atmosphere of this wonderful corner of the earth, where you can temporarily escape from the noise of a modern metropolis.

Hope you enjoyed our tour! Have a nice day!

A Day Trip. The Last Spot - Ganwoldo

Do you remember that I had a day trip a couple of weeks ago? I started with Seosan city then visited International Tulip Festival , and in the end, I have been to Ganwoldo. And I will tell you about that beautiful place now. About Ganwoldo Ganwoldo is an island with an area of 0.88 km2, a coastline of 11 km, and a highest point of 70m. And it belongs to Seosan city. It was a small island located in Cheonsu Bay, but it is now land, not the sea, due to a large-scale reclamation project in 1984. First of all, there is an amazing view. Despite on wind, I enjoyed each minute spent there. One of the main attractions here is a Ganwolam Welcome to Ganwolam If you go to Ganwol-do, you can meet a mysterious and beautiful hermitage floating on the water. There is a baby island in Ganwol-do. This little island is open twice a day at high tide and low tide, about 30m long, and becomes an island and land. Korean language courses in Korea

Travelling around is always awesome, and is full of positive emotions and memories. But during travel, we usually face different issues related to the foreign language. And today we will talk about South Korea and the Korean language. I started to study the Korean language in 2009 when I received a scholarship from Korean Foundation. My first language course was at Hanyang University. It was a short intensive program. The scholarship covered everything, except travel expenses. But still, it was a pretty good deal. The course duration is 3 weeks. A little bit of Korean language… Hangugo (한국어)— Korean language. Hanguk (한국)— Korea, Suffix ‘-o’ (-어) means ‘language’ During the courses, we stayed in the dormitory. There were 2 students in one room. The room was pretty wide: 2 tables, 2 beds, 2 wardrobes, toilet and shower room, etc. The classes were in another building. In order to get there from the dormitory, we could take a subway or free shuttle bus (about 15mins), or just walk (about 3...
